The Vanishing of Gaeta 1

I'm not an Adult Rated Sites kinda guy.

I want to begin this post by telling you that. I'm not a fan of them or the people who dwell on them. During my 14 + years in Second Life I've encountered nothing positive on most of these sites. I do not perform site visits to them or spend any time on them, as I have no appetite for pixel pornography and the general social stereotypes that go along with them.

Linden Lab is retiring the Gaeta 1 continent and using the freed-up capacity to expand the Zindra Adult continent. This decision is driven by economics and usage: General and Moderate mainland areas (including Gaeta 1) have seen declining use and low occupancy, while Adult regions maintain strong, consistent demand. SEX SELLS.

Rather than expanding the overall footprint of the Mainland, Linden Lab is reallocating existing server capacity to better match where residents are actually active.

The Financials-

Linden Research, Inc. (creators of the virtual world Second Life) is a privately held company. It is primarily owned by an investment group led by entrepreneur and Executive Chairman Brad Oberwager (who also serves as CEO), alongside investments from High Fidelity (co-founded by Second Life creator Philip Rosedale)

Linden Lab’s exact net worth is undisclosed because it is a privately held company. However, market estimates and company data point to a company value in the hundreds of millions, largely driven by its flagship virtual world, Second Life.

Approximately 350 residents will lose their homes and be forced to relocate with this corporate decision. And that makes me feel both sad and angry.

I watched the video with the Lindens doing a "Town Hall" on this topic - it was disappointing, to say the least. But BRAVO to the citizens to spoke truth to power. Who voiced concerns over the disappearing of SL's rich history. I saw the names of a few friends in the chat. Here's the link -

Second Life: Town Hall on Gaeta 1 Transition & Zindra Expansion (20 April 2026) (text only)

Inara Pey: Living in a Modemworld also did a great job covering this event -

Gaeta 1 is the second continent I've watched the Lindens destroy. Nacera was the first.

I don't know what the future of Second Life will be. I can't even pretend to speculate. But I will add my voice to the chorus of voices who now say - If they decide to turn Second Life into an all adult rated platform, I will leave.

ADDENDUM - It's all about the money for Linden Lab, just like the rest of Silicon Valley.

Linden Lab has announced a series of pricing updates for Second Life. While land ownership and currency transaction fees have been reduced, the cost of standard paid memberships is increasing. The new subscription prices take effect for all accounts on July 8, 2026

There will be no reduction in tier for my 1/2 region category.

Premium Plus Annual Plan: Increased to $287.88 per year.

Which increases my annual base outlay for Second Life to $1,523.88. I seriously need to consider how much longer I'm going to be willing to do this, considering the skyrocketing costs of RL necessities like gas for my car, utilities  and groceries which in some cases have nearly tripled over this past year.

Until next time - Stay Curious and enjoy your travels.

This piece of music came on just as I was writing this, it felt appropriate to add here.
